Dear Alpha Parents:

I hope your enjoying the cool weather in the mornings and evenings!  I sure am!  Please take some time to talk to your child about fall and all the seasonal changes that occur during this colorful season!  We will continue to do the same in class!

Our Refrigerator Story for this week is Fall.  It will reinforce the sight word “like” and introduce the sight word “is”.  In class, we are working on recognizing the sight words out of context.  We’ve played memory.  In memory, the students have to turn a card with a sight word written on it and try to find the matching card.  They have to read the cards when they turn them over.  Also, we’ve played Sight Word Bingo.  I say a sight word and the students have to find it on their card and place a chip on it.  The first one to cover all the spots on the card wins!  Somehow, they all win ;)!  The students are having fun and learning at the same time.  It’s awesome!

Our letter of the week is “P”!  The movement for the letter P is to hold up your index finger, as if it is a candle, and imagine puffing it out, saying “p, p, p”.  We will begin doing picture sorts with two different letters.  The students will have different picture cards.  They will sort the picture cards according to the beginning sound.  This is a great way to develop their phonemic awareness.  Don’t forget to remind your child to bring an item for Show and Tell that begins with the letter P.

In writing, we will continue to work on adding details and “words” to our stories.  Also, we’ve been working on being respectful of others during the writing and sharing time.  They’re all excited to write and share their stories.  However, I’m trying to help them understand that during writing time we don’t use our words, we use our hand to write and add details to the story.  During sharing time, we sit quietly and listen to our classmate’s story and wait patiently for our turn.  At the end of sharing, they can add a positive comment about their classmate’s writing!

In math, they are doing great!  They are doing very well identifying numbers, shapes and coins, counting, graphing, etc.  They seem to enjoy math time!  This week, we will act out story problems, identify, describe and compare shapes and identify and order the numbers from 1-5.  During calendar, we will introduce the nickel and the hexagon (which they probably already know because of the pattern blocks).

I’m glad I had the chance to see and talk to all of you at the school picnic on Friday!  I had a great time!  I’m also happy the children had a chance to meet my family.  Most of my stories, during writing workshop, are about my family and it’s nice to be able to put a face to a name.

Thank you for everything you do!  Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Carol Acosta
