"Impromptu" Science Team Takes 2nd in Region
On Friday,
February 6th, at 3:30 in the afternoon, the EPCDS Middle
School found out about a Regional Science Tournament in Las
Cruces, New Mexico that was to take place the following day.
It was late in the day, at the end of the week, but parents
Sylvia Coenraad and Carolyn Johnson were quick to assemble a
team of four 6th grade students to represent EPCDS at the
tournament. The following day, with virtually no
preparation, four EPCDS sixth grade students defeated team
after team - 15 in all - of 6th, 7th and 8th graders
from schools from all over El Paso and Las Cruces. In fact,
the EPCDS 6th graders did so well in the Jeopardy-Style
face-off that they beat every single team that they faced
except one. As a result, EPCDS is now the runner up to
represent the region in Washington D.C. at the National
Finals. Not bad for 12 hours' notice! Hats off to Grant,
Spencer, Pablo and Noel for an outstanding performance, and
to Mrs. Coenraad and Mrs. Johnson for their dedicated parent
involvement.
State Math Champs... Again!
The EPCDS Math
Team travelled to Midland, Texas to compete in the Texas
State Math Tournament and came away numerous 1st Place
finishes. Almost every student placed in the top 10 in at
least one event and the team easily won the 1A Division. In
fact, many of the EPCDS members' individual scores were far
higher than those of students from 5A schools, which have
thousands of students. The tradition of mathematical
excellence at EPCDS has always been strong, and it
continues...
